Retreat Home and Art Studio

Located on a rural property in Michigan, this project combines simple living spaces and art studio space to create a rural retreat.  Using the earth from excavation, the facades of the home and studio facing the road are supporting a berm for natural plantings.  The 'L-shaped' plan faces onto a shared garden space for both edible planting as well as use for exterior art-space.  The structure features using re-purposed heavy-timber wood beams, posts, and joists, while the exterior is clad in 'shou-sugi-ban' charred exterior siding, also re-purposed from existing barns in the area.
